23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #23: For Countless Animals, China Is Hell on Earth

With no animal protection laws, strong demand for ivory and animal-based ingredients for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and lax enforcement of international laws governing wildlife trade, China is the worst country in the world for animal welfare

[When I started this blog in 2008, my first post was about a dog who was chained inside a gallery and starved as part of an "artwork." Since then, animal welfare has remained a primary theme on 13.7 Billion Years. Over the years, I have learned about countless stories of animal cruelty here in the United States and across the world. But one country has shown the most blatant and widespread disregard for the lives and well-being of non-human animals: China. As Mahatma Gandhi wisely observed, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated." If China is to become a great nation, it has a lot of work to do. One way concerned people can help put pressure on China to change is to stop buying Chinese goods. More than 2.3 million people worldwide have signed the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, and the number of animal lovers around the globe is much greater. Imagine if all of them stopped purchasing Chinese products. So, every weekday for the month of August, I gave animal lovers one reason to boycott China—23 reasons in all. It was not an easy month to digest all the horrific stories and cruel practices. But I have placed great value in a quote by the late philosopher Albert Schweitzer: "Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight." I often do, and I hope that from time to time, you do too. -- Reynard Loki]

"Animals are treated dreadfully in Chinese farms, laboratories, zoos and elsewhere," reports The Economist. "There are grim factories where thousands of live bears in tiny cages are tapped for medicinal bile. At safari parks, live sheep and poultry are fed to lions as spectators cheer. At farms and in slaughterhouses, animals are killed with little concern for their suffering."

"According to Zhou Ping, of China's legislature, the National People's Congress, few Chinese accept that animals have any rights at all. She thinks it is time they did, and in 2006 put forward China's first national animal-welfare law. Her proposal got nowhere, and there is no sign of progress since. 'There is so far', she says, 'only a small voice calling for change.'"

Considering that over 2.3 million people around the world have signed the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare—with the total number of animal lovers worldwide much greater—one powerful method for engendering change is for animal lovers everywhere to boycott Chinese-made goods. At the very least, animal lovers would not be supporting the economy of a nation that has not demonstrated the ethical maturity described in Gandhi's famous quote, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated."

By that measure alone, China is one of the most immoral nations. And for countless animals who needlessly suffer and die, and for entire species that risk being wiped out—whether within China's borders or outside China to support the domestic market—China is pure hell on Earth.

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #22: China Drowns Baby Mice to Make a Health Tonic

Baby mice are drowned alive in rice wine to make a tonic that some Chinese believe cures asthma

Baby mice wine is a traditional Chinese health tonic that is believed to cure asthma and liver disease.

Baby mice, no more than three days old with eyes still closed, are taken from their mothers and placed live into a bottle of rice wine, where they drown and ferment.

It isn't just one mouse, but many of them floating at the bottom of the bottle.

"Field mouse wine is said to be good for driving out wind, clearing up meridians, and improving blood circulation," according to a National Geographic article entitled, "The Witch Doctor Will See You Now."

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #21: China Allows Horse Fighting

Thousands of Chinese gather regularly to watch horses fighting

Daily Mail reports:

"[This] shocking [photo] of two stallions covered in blood and ferociously biting each other were taken at the annual horsefight in Antai, China, where such animal cruelty is considered 'sport'.

At the annual event, which dates back a staggering 500 years, horses are pitted against each other as thousands of locals watch, with many cheering them on and taking photographs.

The stallions are encouraged to fight by being lead to a mare in heat, and then taking the female horse away when the stallions are aroused.

If the stallions still refuse to fight then they are whipped and gunshots are fired to frighten them.

While the 'sport' of horse fighting is enjoyed throughout China, it has been labelled 'barbaric' by animal rights campaigners.

Vivian Farrell, President of the International Fund For Horses, which has led campaigns to ban horse fighting, said: 'It's cruel and inhumane and I don't know why they do it.

'Sadly it is mostly driven by the Chinese love of gambling, although people get fired up over the blood, gore and intensity of the fighting.'

A spokesperson for PETA added: 'Torturing these magnificent animals in the name of entertainment is deplorable. Tradition never justifies cruelty and has no place in a civilised society.'

Horse fighting has been outlawed almost worldwide, but it still thrives in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea and China."

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #20: China Sells Videos of Animals Being Crushed to Death

Websites in China sell videos of small animals being crushed to death by women in high heels

Shanghai Daily reports:

"Cyber sadists have figured out a way to profit from cruelty to small creatures, and animal rights activists say it's high time China enacts tough laws to stamp out such abuse.

Several Websites have cropped up recently offering videos and still photos of dogs, cats, rabbits and toads being stomped to death by a sexy woman wearing stockings and high heels.

Animal 'snuff' videos were posted on these sites for sale at 15 yuan (US$1.87) each. There were bulletin boards for fetish fans, who could even join a group called the International Crushing Association.

At least one of the sites was reportedly registered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

In one, a scantily clad woman with Chinese features posed with a small kitten along a riverbank, at first gently caressing the animal's fur. She then began stomping on the kitten with her high-heeled shoes, crushing its body and head and leaving it in a lifeless, bloody heap."

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #19: China Kills Baby Mice for Delicacy Dish

In one particularly horrifying Chinese dish, baby mice are eaten live

[When I started this blog in 2008, my first post was about a dog who was chained inside a gallery and starved as part of an "artwork." In his memoir, The Attic: Memoir of a Chinese Landlord's Son, Chinese author Guanlong Cao describes a famous dish called Baby Mice:

"A baby mouse is only as big as the last segment of your little finger. Pink. No hair…The squirming babies are put in a small gilded-porcelain dish and brought to the table. Simultaneously, a dish of sauce is served: mustard, wild pepper, soy sauce, sesame oil, white vinegar, brown sugar, and so on…You just pick one up with pointed, ivory chopsticks and drop it in the sauce. It rolls and wiggles, coating its body with all the spices. Then you pick it up again and pop it in your mouth."

In her New York Times review of Cao's book, author Wendy Lesser writes, "Horrified readers will perhaps be a little less enraged at me if I mention that this is the least sickening description in the chapter. The accounts of flaying and eating live monkeys, live birds and fish, and live dogs were too painful even to transcribe."

Japanese travel blogger Hiroki writes that the dish is called "San Zhi Er," which is literally translated as "Three Screams."

"The reasons why it's called the Three Screams," he writes, "is because the baby mice would scream once when they are picked up with chopsticks. Its second scream comes when they are dipped in the sauce and seasoning. The final scream would occur when they would be put in the eaters mouth."

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #18: China Kills Endangered Turtles

Chinese traditional medicine (TCM) is pushing endangered turtle species to extinction

According to the Chinese religious tradition of Taoism, the turtle—with its shell symbolizing heaven and its flat underside symbolizing earth—is believed to be a spiritual creature uniting the two worlds as a symbol of longevity.

But unfortunately, endangered turtles are being eaten to extinction by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, who believe that the animals have some medicinal effect, though there is no scientific evidence to support any such claims.

"Turtles, which are both revered and consumed in China, were decimated in the wild by pollution and hunting," according to New York Times. "Traders quickly pushed into Southeast Asia, India and even the United States to meet demand."

"In conservation terms, it became a crisis," said Dr. Peter Pritchard, an American turtle expert who has helped in trying to save the species. “It was first noticed [in 2000 or 2001]. The China market had become packed with turtles not from China."

"Listed at the top of the World Conservation Union's Red List, the Yangtze giant softshell turtle is the most critically endangered turtle in the world," according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. "Its status in the wild has long been recognized as grim, but extinction risk now is believed higher than ever. Much of its demise has been attributed to…over-harvesting for Asian food markets." Its carapace, blood and bones are used to make various TCM products.

"In Indonesia, for example, the Sulawesi forest turtle is already endangered after being known to science for less than 10 years. The belief that soup and jelly made from the Chinese three-striped box turtle has cancer-curing properties had reduced populations of this species to a few remnant colonies in Northern Vietnam and China."

"Human exploitation and development-related pressures are two of the biggest threats to the turtles," reports Acupuncture: Gateway to Chinese Medicine, noting that the Turtle Conservation Fund "is particularly concerned with the demand from the Asian food and traditional medicine markets. Tons of live turtles are imported each day to southern China from the Southeast Asia region, with more than 10 million turtles traded each year."

In December, a court in the Philippines charged six Chinese fishermen with poaching following their arrest after their speedboat was intercepted off the coast of Palawan Island. Onboard, authorities found 12 endangered green turtles, nine of which were already dead. The three living turtles were released back into the wild on the spot.

23 Reasons Animal Lovers Should Boycott China - Reason #17: China Requires Animal Testing on Cosmetics

Countless animals suffer and die every year to satisfy Chinese laws requiring they be used to test cosmetics

"Like me, most people will be shocked to learn that testing cosmetics on animals is often still a legal requirement in China," said actor, comedian and HSUS/Humane Society International supporter Ricky Gervais.

"By law, rabbits must have cosmetic chemicals dripped in their eyes or spread over their sensitive skin, causing sores and bleeding. It makes me really angry that this is still going on, and it makes me particularly angry that some previously cruelty-free companies are abandoning their principles and returning to animal testing in order to profit from the Chinese market."

Tens of thousands of animals suffer and die every year simply to test shampoo, mascara and other cosmetic and beauty products. The HSUS says, "Terrified mice, rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs have substances forced down their throat, dripped into their eyes, or smeared onto their skin before they are killed. It's the ugly secret of the beauty industry that we’re determined to stop."

In addition to the aforementioned animals, monkeys undergo various tests like the Draize eye irritancy test, in which shampoos, cosmetics, pesticides, weed-killers, household products, riot control gases and other substances are put into the animal's eyes.

In order to profit from consumers in China, Yves Rocher, L’Occitane, Mary Kay, Caudalie and other companies in the beauty industry have ended their cruelty-free policies.

"While I consider the actions of these companies feckless, the root of the problem is China's conservative regulatory policy," said HSUS president Wayne Pacelle.

"Through our global Be Cruelty-Free Campaign, we're calling on Chinese authorities to give the country's cosmetic testing policy a makeover, replacing outdated and wasteful animal testing requirements with cutting-edge non-animal methods. It's unacceptable that the policies of a single country should be allowed undermine the global movement to end animal testing for cosmetics."
