Do dogs dream?

"At the structural level, the brains of dogs are similar to those of humans," writes Dr. Stanley Coren on the Psychology Today website. "Also, during sleep the brain wave patterns of dogs are similar that of people, and go through the same stages of electrical activity observed in humans, all of which is consistent with the idea that dogs are dreaming."

Bella and Tarra

A dog and an elephant were best friends

[With the heat of July in the Northern Hemisphere come the so-called "dog days of summer," a perfect time to remember just how cool man's best friend is. The Romans called the dog days "diēs caniculārēs" and connected the period's hot temperatures with the star Sirius (a.k.a, the "Dog Star"), the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, or "Large Dog."]

Bella was a dog who lived at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, but she was the only one who became best friends with one of the elephants, Tarra. They were inseparable. They ate together, played together and had sleepovers inside the barn. Sadly, Bella died late last year after what was believed to have been a coyote attack. Tarra found Bella's body after the attack and carried her to the spot they often spent time together. Hopefully, the big girl has already befriended one of the more than a dozen stray dogs, who, like Bella, made this special place their home.

In this video, animal behaviorists at the Cincinnati Zoo introduce Tommy T, a cheetah cub and Pow Wow, an Anatolian shepherd puppy, for the first time. They will become ambassadors in the zoo's Cat Ambassador program. The Anatolian shepherd is an ancient livestock guardian dog, prized for its devotion to its flock and its ability to kill wolves. Because Pow Wow and Tommy are being imprinted on each other as babies, Pow Wow will likely protect Tommy for the rest of his life.

While it may sound like Mishka is actually talking, what she's really doing is imitating. "Dogs are able to imitate humans as well as they do because they pick up on the differences in our tonal patterns," writes Tina Adler in a Scientific American article entitled, "Fact or Fiction: Dogs Can Talk." It's something that Harry Miles Johnson of Johns Hopkins University back in 1912 described as "intelligent imitation." Especially effective if there's a treat involved...
