Tata vs. Turtles

The construction company Dredging International is building a large port for the Indian car manufacturer Tata in Orissa, near the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary and Bhitarkanika National Park where the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle nests.

The operations have begun without a serious assessment of the potential environmental damage to the area. Over 100,000 people around the world and over 200 scientists – 25 of them from the Marine Turtle Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – have called for an immediate suspension of the Dhamra port project until an independent study can be made about the impact to the area's biodiversity.

  • Sign a Greenpeace letter to Ratan Tata of Tata Motors and Alain Bernard of Dredging International urging them to stop dredging in Dharma until a comprehensive and independent assessment of the project's environmental impact can be made
